1) What is the festival theme for 2023 and how was it selected?
Together with protagonists from the arts, sciences, architecture, theater, design, and art education sectors for 2023 this festival theme was selected:
Play(ground)
“Play so that you may be serious.” Anacharsis
For this 25th summer season we want to playfully bring art into locations across Neukölln. With the 2023 edition of the festival we will create artistically open spaces somewhere between child’s play, power plays, and a variety of game worlds for a (playful) confrontation with the challenges in these times of enduring crisis.
To play is part of life and can be used as a contrast and balance to work, conflicts, and wars, or even as a tool for processing trauma.
Whether as a voluntary, purposeful activity that unfolds freely; or as a social act strategically oriented towards self-discovery and the abundance of responsibilities towards our fellow human beings – playfulness has an important roll in urban society.
What places do we play in?
What social expressions emerge in urban games?
Through play – that complex and multifaceted phenomenon – we construct our own frameworks, transform reality through our imaginations, and define our own roles.
So let’s play!

If you would like to apply for a Signal we ask that you first contact us directly so that we may support you with our project development experience.
ArtSpaceLabs is oriented towards curated group exhibitions.
With ArtSpaceLabs curated group exhibitions will be able to find funding. Project spaces and curators are invited to experiment with exhibition concepts.

The cost calculations must be presented in the form of a legible finance plan or spreadsheet and included as a PDF.
